Walk into any craft store (or scroll through an online shop) and you’ll quickly realize there’s no shortage of cardstock options. Thick or thin? Matte or glossy? Smooth or textured? It’s a lot to take in, especially when you’re just trying to make a pretty card.
Here’s the thing: the cardstock you choose matters more than most crafters realize. It affects how cleanly your dies cut, how your ink stamps, how your layers look when stacked — basically everything. So let’s break it down in plain terms.
1. Weight: The Most Important Factor
Cardstock weight is measured in pounds (lb) or grams per square meter (GSM). The higher the number, the thicker and more rigid the paper.
- 65 lb / 90 GSM: Lightweight. Good for layered die cuts where you need pieces to stack without adding too much bulk.
- 80 lb / 110 GSM: The everyday workhorse. Most cardmakers reach for this weight automatically, and for good reason — it cuts cleanly, folds well, and stamps beautifully.
- 90-110 lb / 120-160 GSM: Medium-heavy. Excellent for card bases, box making, and projects that need to hold their shape.
- 140 lb / 200 GSM and above: Heavy-duty. Use this for gift boxes, 3D projects, or anything that needs serious structure.
For most die cutting projects, 80 lb is your sweet spot. If you’re making 3D layered pieces (like our layered bow dies), consider using a lighter weight for the inner layers so the assembled piece doesn’t get too stiff.
2. Surface Finish: Smooth vs. Textured
Cardstock finishes fall into a few main categories, and each has its strengths:
Smooth/matte: Clean, professional look. Ink stamps and prints with crisp edges. This is the go-to for most card making and scrapbooking. Works great with fine-detail dies.
Glossy: High-shine finish that makes colors pop. Great for photo mounts and bold, graphic designs — but ink can smear on this surface, so choose your markers carefully.
Metallic: Adds instant glamour. Perfect for Christmas, wedding, and celebration projects. Our holiday die sets look absolutely beautiful on metallic cardstock.
Linen/textured: Has a fabric-like raised pattern. Adds a handcrafted, artisan feel. Beautiful for rustic or vintage-themed projects.
Vellum: Translucent and dreamy. Layer it over colorful cardstock for a soft, glowing effect. Works wonderfully with floral and botanical dies.
3. Acid-Free and Archival Quality: Why It Matters
If you’re making anything you want to last — a memory album, a keepsake card, a framed piece — go acid-free. Regular paper contains acids that cause yellowing and brittleness over time. Acid-free cardstock is pH-neutral, which means it stays crisp and true-colored for decades.
For scrapbooking and memory keeping especially, look for “archival quality” on the label. It’s genuinely protective — it keeps your projects from fading and degrading over time.

4. Color and Pattern: Have Fun Here
This is honestly the best part. Cardstock comes in every color imaginable, plus patterns, prints, and specialty designs.
A few practical tips:
- Neutral tones (white, cream, kraft, grey) are the most versatile. Stock up on these.
- Coordinate colors within a palette rather than grabbing random shades — it makes a big difference in the finished look.
- Patterned cardstock adds instant personality to simple die cut shapes. Try cutting a basic leaf or flower die from a patterned sheet and watch it transform.
- Consider the occasion: soft pastels for spring and Easter, rich jewel tones for Christmas, warm neutrals for everyday use.
5. Cardstock and Die Cutting: What Actually Works
Some real-world advice from experience:
Smooth 80 lb cardstock cuts the cleanest through metal dies. If you’re getting fuzzy or torn edges, the cardstock is probably too cheap or too textured.
Double-sided cardstock (same color on both sides) is worth the extra cost for die cuts, since the back often shows when pieces curl slightly.
For detailed dies with tiny cutouts, thinner and smoother is better. Too-thick cardstock won’t let the die’s fine points cut through completely.
Always cut a test strip before committing to a full sheet — especially with new cardstock you haven’t used before.
